The Department of Infectious Diseases was established on 24.10.1996 (Order No. 160-1) and is part of the Medical Institute of Sumy State University. The organizer of the department was Doctor of Medicine, Professor M.D. Chemych. The department included the following courses: children’s infectious diseases (1996-1998; in 1998 it was merged with the Department of Pediatrics No. 1); microbiology, virology and immunology (2004-2012; in 2012 it became part of the newly created Department of Hygiene, Ecology and Microbiology, Virology and Immunology). From 24.10.1996 to 31.08.2002 the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Z. Krasovytskyi (27.11.1923 – 22.08.2008). Since 01.09.2002 the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor M. Chemych.
